Playing sports at an elite level always draws scrutiny. And Jessica Pegula, an American tennis phenom, knows this all too well. After her quarterfinals loss at Wimbledon, Pegula once more found the public’s gaze heavily upon her thanks to a divisive headline. Pegula is the daughter of Terry and Kim Pegula who are the billionaire owners of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.  She has been surrounded her entire life by assumptions and judgments surrounding her tennis career. Despite this, the Times of London recently decided it was necessary to highlight Pegula’s failed attempts of advancing past the quarterfinals in Grand Slam tournaments. The outlet sought attention for its provocative headline,  “Six quarter-finals, six defeats: Jessica Pegula needs dynamic that family billions can’t buy.”

Too often, critical articles perpetuate the message that despite financial privilege, success is still out of reach. Unaccepting the incendiary message in the article, Pegula fired back on Twitter.
