Jessica Pegula is currently on fire. The 29-year-old American player stepped into the WTA Finals after earning the big trophy in the Korea Open and is focused on keeping the momentum alive. She carried a blemish from the 2022 Finals, which she has now destroyed, having beaten top-form Aryna Sabalenka in Round Two. Her victory over the current world number 1 has given her ultimate bragging rights as she recreates an older record of Serena Williams.

Pegula’s ferocity has caught the eyes of many tennis personalities. Playing a match against the world number 1 would pit general favor against them. However, going into the bout with Sabalenka, Pegula had the support of Serena Williams’ former coach.

As the Belarusian beauty went into the last WTA tournament of the year, many expected her to go undefeated in the group stages. However, that dream was shattered by Pegula as she beat the world number 1 in straight sets. The final score of the match was 6-4, 6-3, and the American player was the one left smiling. But the victory was not the only great achievement by Pegula.

Pegula now has consecutive wins in the round-robin stages, which makes it highly probable that she will play in the semifinals. Many could not believe the result of the clash, but Serena Williams’ former coach certainly did.

The former coach of Williams shows utmost faith in Pegula

Pegula’s victory over Elena Rybakina in the first round of the WTA Finals revived the faith of fans in the daughter of the Buffalo Bills owners. Many praised her, but Rennae Stubbs was at the forefront of the supporters. The Aussie coach – who formerly trained the legendary Serena Willians – knew that Pegula was in Cancun to win and that she would be tough to defeat in the current tournament.

Stubbs shared a post on her ‘X’ account where she talked highly of her. She further said that the conditions were in her favor since she trains in Florida and is used to the wind. Stubbs’ words proved to be true after Pegula’s resounding victory against the current number 1. Now, she will face Maria Sakkari in Round 3, hoping to recreate the same results as her first two bouts.
