Serena Williams has been an outspoken person. She never shies away from addressing matters of debate and presenting her take. However, at the same time, she tries to keep herself away from unnecessary hassle. The 23 times Grand Slam champion represents her community and is always proud to see other people do the same.

Although she doesn’t have an interest in politics, she for sure was delighted to see a black person run for the office. Williams shared her views about Barack Obama seeking the position of President. Here’s what she said when he first emerged as a leader.

Williams, in an interview in 2008, spoke about Obama, who later held the position of USA’s President for two terms. She said, “I don’t really get involved in political affairs because of the way I was brought up and being a Jehovah’s Witness. But it’s exciting to see someone like Barack Obama have a chance to lead one of the world’s biggest nations.”

Thereafter, the former World No 1 added, “it’s just interesting. Think 40 years ago or 30 years ago, all the things that were going on, the persecution we had to go through. And it’s good. It makes my heart smile.”
Obama, now 61-year-old, became the 44th overall and the first African American President of the USA. He started his service in 2009 and stepped down in the year 2017. Coming to Williams, after the interview, she travelled to Qatar for the WTA 500 tournament in Doha.

She made up to the finals of Wimbledon that year and marked the US Open trophy under her name. Also, she brought a gold medal from the summer Olympics in Beijing.
Williams marking the end of an illustrious career
The seven-time Wimbledon champion rejoined the circuit after a year gap and decided to hang her racket. She planned her retirement tour by adding WTA 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati and the Grand Slam of the American swing. Williams performed her last dance on the hard courts of the home-based US Open.

The 41-year-old, keeping her record intact, made up to the third round of the majors and post a three-set long match against the Aussie Ajla Tomljanović. Then she said goodbye. With tears in her eyes, and a stadium full of admirers, she gave her thank you speech and entered the second phase of her life.
