Serena Williams once displayed a religious act on the tennis court. Yes, back in 2001, the tennis player was playing in the Indian Wells final. That too, in between the last bout, she prayed in a literal sense to let the toxin out of her head.
The iconic Williams sisters duo were raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses by their mother, Oracene Price. Not only that, the 22-time Grand Slam champion has always been quite open about her belief in god. And has always been grateful for a successful tennis career.

When Serena Williams prayed to Jehovah
The former world number one in her book, ‘Queen of the Court’, also detailed the time when her belief in God multiplied. In one instance, she talked about the difficulty she face at Indian Wells when she was trying to clinch her second tournament title. She also revealed how that prayer changed her life at that point.
She wrote, “I said a simple little prayer that just about changed my life. I said, ‘Jehovah, give me the strength to get up from this chair. Give me the strength to finish this match. Give me the strength to persevere.’ I actually spoke these words out loud. Well, not out loud in any kind of public speaking voice, but in a whisper, I could certainly hear above the din. I didn’t ask Him to help me win. I didn’t ask Him to help me with my serve.”
She didn’t ask for anything materialistic. She just wanted to keep her head up during the match against Kim Clijsters. In such a way that she can end the match on a wonderful note, even if she loses the game. However, the American tennis legend has always been clear about her spiritual connection. Moreover, last year she shared her belief in having a clear religious faith.
