Maria Sharapova and Eugenie Bouchard’s rivalry is famous for all the wrong reasons. The two played some memorable matches against each other, with Sharapova dominating their rivalry. The five-time Grand Slam champion won four of the five matches played against Bouchard. Further, her only loss against the Canadian came in Madrid in 2017.

However, after Sharapova returned from the doping ban in 2017, Bouchard labeled her as ‘a cheater’, during an interview. Apparently, Bouchard wasn’t happy that Sharapova received wildcard entries to participate in big tournaments. Subsequently, the war of words continued between the two.
Recently, Bouchard opened up about her warm-up with Sharapova before their match.
Eugenie Bouchard on warming up with Maria Sharapova
During a talk show, the host asked Bouchard, “Have you ever, like, played a warm-up with anyone and they were just like being a d**k?” The Canadian replied, “Oh yeah Sharapova. She just like tries to hit the ball as hard as she can in the warm-up. It’s so annoying. She’s trying to intimidate you but it didn’t work on me.”
Further, she added, “The umpire can’t force you to do anything. Ultimately the umpire can’t force the person to warm up like you could just walk on the court and decide not to warm up if you don’t want to but normally most of us just do some easy rallying to feel good and some try to do winners and try hit as hard as they can.”
However, Bouchard misses playing against her great rival. She said, “Unfortunately we can’t play anymore, I mean, she’s a great competitor and we had battles for sure but uh no we can’t play anymore. She’s retired.”

While Sharapova hung up her boots in 2020 after the Australian Open, Bouchard has been out of action after suffering a shoulder injury. She last played in March, last year, in Monterrey, Mexico. However, she is on the brink of making a return to tennis. Last month, she even played an exhibition set to regain match fitness. Hopefully, she’ll be back in action soon in the upcoming tournaments.
