Iga Swiatek has undoubtedly cemented her position at the helm of women’s tennis. After taking over the number 1 spot in the WTA rankings from Australian Ashleigh Barty in April last year, the Pole has continued to establish her dominance on the tour. Ranked number 1 in the world for over a year now, Iga Swiatek’s juggernaut wreaked havoc on the French Open yet again this year.

Iga Swiatek clinched her 3rd Roland Garros title in 4 years with a hard-fought victory over Czech Republic’s Karolina Muchova in a thrilling final. However, her celebrations with the Suzanne Lenglen trophy didn’t go as planned. After being presented with the much coveted French Open women’s singles trophy, a rather unusual and embarrassing moment almost spoiled her party.

The 22-year-old won her 3rd Roland Garros and 4th major overall in Paris on Saturday. After being presented with the Suzanne Lenglen trophy, the occasion seemed to have gotten the better of the Pole. While celebrating with the trophy in her hand, she shook it in jubilation, causing the lid to accidentally fall off from the trophy on the ground.

She was quizzed about her thoughts regarding this embarrassing slip-up during her post-match press conference. “I honestly felt like I’m holding it with my finger, so I guess all these emotions, I don’t know, caused that. Sorry. I don’t mean to be disrespectful. I’m glad that Suzanne Lenglen trophy is fine and it won’t happen again probably, but we’ll see… I just hope I’m gonna have a chance to hold it again in future years”, Swiatek answered.

She is no stranger to winning trophies in her much-decorated career. However, all the emotions, the adrenaline, and the sheer joy of winning may have taken over the moment for Swiatek.

Iga Swiatek made her presence felt on the WTA tour with her first grand slam win at the French Open in 2020 as a 19-year-old, without dropping a single set. With this, she became the youngest Roland Garros winner since Rafael Nadal in 2005. She added a few more records to her name at this year’s French Open.

Swiatek became only the 4th player in the Open Era to win every single one of their first 4 grand slam finals, with Roger Federer, Monica Seles, and Naomi Osaka being the other 3. She also becomes the youngest woman to win 4 grand slam titles since 20-year-old Serena Williams at the 2002 US Open.

With 3 French Open titles already to her name, she is quite familiar with the Suzanne Lenglen trophy by now. And given her dominant display on the court, bagging a few more titles here certainly looks on the cards. She can only hope to be a bit gentler with the trophy next time!
