Love will always find a way! American tennis star Sloane Stephens married her longtime boyfriend and childhood friend, Jozy Altidore on January 1, 2022. Stephens is one of the most popular American tennis stars and Altidore is no stranger to the sporting world. They usually spend most of their time in different parts of the globe, and have gone without seeing each other’s for several days or weeks. How do the two manage their relationship with their busy schedules?

Altidore is a soccer star, who plays as a striker, with his last appearance for New England Revolution. He has also represented his nation at the junior and senior levels. At the senior level, he has made 115 appearances for the USA and scored a total of 42 goals. At 16, he made his professional debut in 2006 for the New York Red Bulls. He has played for multiple clubs across the globe and won the US Soccer Athlete of the Year twice in his career (2013, 2016).

Altidore first met Stephens when they were in middle school in Boca Raton, Florida. However, when Stephens moved away to pursue her career in tennis, they disconnected until 2016. They ran into each other at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Since then, they have weathered all storms that came their way with their hands held strong. Altidore proposed to Stephens in April 2019.

She’s now glad to have him in his life. Reflecting on their unique chemistry, Stephens once said, “Because Jozy is also a professional athlete, there is so much implied understanding about what is required for each of us to do to be and feel our best. It is so comforting to have that level of understanding in a partner.”

Stephens further said, “Our lives have a lot of distractions and it would be really easy to be pulled in a million directions and pursue lots of different opportunities, so it is absolutely critical to really be vulnerable with each other and align on our end goals and what we’re working towards.”

Bringing “discipline” into their lives has played a crucial role in building a strong bond between them. Stephens once admitted, “We are very disciplined with our schedules and expressing our priorities to our teams so that when it is family time, we are all in and fully present.” They didn’t even go on a honeymoon soon after their marriage due to their tight schedules, instead, the couple valued their time together at home.

Such is the harsh reality of the other side of the lives of all professional athletes. So, understanding plays a crucial role here! Altidore once spoke about the unique understanding between him and Stephens during an interview.

Like for example during an interview with PEOPLE in January 2022, Stephens said, “We both have incredible, crazy jobs and lives, and knowing that through it all, we have each other as our constant and true home base is such a comforting feeling.”

Even Altidore acknowledges the adjustments his wife makes to make things stick together. Stephens is an inspiration for him. “She has such a big heart and has empathy for everyone. She amazes me every single day,” said the soccer star. In January 2024, the couple celebrated their two years of marriage with a similar acknowledgment post on Instagram.

Altidore has a son from a previous relationship and Sloane Stephens has time and again expressed her admiration for Altidore after seeing her love for the kid. According to Jozy Altidore, “She is somebody who gets everything I am going through without having to say anything. You look at each other and you kind of know right away if one of you is annoyed. She just kind of gets the mood I’m in, as obviously she lives a very similar kind of life” He feels this is something that makes their bond more strong and unique all at the same time.
