At the on-going Madrid Open, four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka has faced a shock defeat against the Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo. The 25-year-old Spaniard absolutely destroyed the Japanese superstar in straight sets. We all knew this was going to be a tough match for the former world no.1. However, she had an injury concern before the start of the match, as her left calf was heavily taped.

It’s fair to say that the the Japanese star doesn’t have a great record on the red dirt. In her entire career, she has never gone past the third round at Roland Garros. Osaka had high hopes this year during the clay-court season, which took a major hit after her loss against Sara Sorribes Tormo in Madrid.

In her very first match, she cruised past Anastasia Potapova in straight sets. It was expected that her winning momentum is going to continue against Sorribes Tormo as well. However, the world no. 47 had other plans as she knocked Naomi Out in straight sets. The final score was 6-3,6-1 as the match lasted less than an hour and a half.

Despite the loss, the main concern for Naomi will be her left leg was heavily strapped before the start of the match. Many fans noticed that and immediately showed concern for the Japanese player. Right now, we are not sure about the seriousness of that injury. But, she didn’t look fully fit as it clearly hampered her chances against the Spaniard.

What’s next for Naomi?

Earlier, she talked about playing in both Madrid and Rome before the French Open. After receiving a wild card at Madrid Open, she will probably receive the same for Rome as well. However, the latest injury could derail Osaka’s plans and her clay-court campaign. Right now, we don’t have any confirmation about her injury and her participation at the Italian Open.

It’s safe to say that Naomi Osaka’s clay-court campaign is not looking good. Right now, she will be hoping to get back to her full fitness before the French Open even if she doesn’t play in Rome.
