The meteoric rise of Yue Yuan, fueled by constant support from her coach, Jose Hernandez, has occurred in an astounding timeframe. “I was having breakfast, looking to see who she was, because the only thing I had was her WhatsApp profile photo and YouTube videos. There, a teammate comes across me, and he tells me, ‘Your player is just the one in front of you.’ There we showed up, and everything went very well; the rest is history,” Jose Hernandez stated.

He is not only Yue Yuan’s first non-Chinese coach, but their collaboration has accomplished several significant milestones in a very short span of time. The 25-year-old defeated Daria Kasatkina to extend her winning run to nine games. She will face Coco Gauff in her next Indian Wells match.

“It was crazy: her first WTA title at my first tournament. I’m also her first non-Chinese coach, well, a lot of first times, it doesn’t make sense. We met on Sunday at breakfast, the following Sunday we were lifting the trophy,” pointed out Hernandez. But when it comes to taking credit for his coaching of Yue Yuan and leading her to the victory on-court, Jose Hernandez has a distinct insight on the matter.
