Collins, who played her first tournament post the Australian Open success in Dubai, was up against the qualifier, Marketa Vondrousova, of the Czech Republic in the first round. She won the first set comfortably 6-2. However, Collins was visibly upset with the discomfort in her hand and retired mid-way through the second set, trailing 3-0.
Earlier, World Number 1 and Australian Open champion, Ashleigh Barty, had pulled out of the BNP Paribas Open and the Miami Open owing to health issues. Barty cited that her body hadn’t recovered completely. Additionally, she also stated that she wasn’t at the necessary level to win these events. Hence, she would be skipping the ‘Sunshine Double’.
