When Venus and Serena started playing tennis at a tender age, people of color tended to steer clear of the sport. The undercurrent of racial discrimination affected the Williams sisters as well. It led to them being pulled out from participating in tournaments by their father. Their mother, Oracene Price, however, prevented it from derailing the sisters’ dreams.

In the Instagram post, Serena wrote, “My mom instilled in us to be confident women, to really believe in ourselves, be proud of our heritage, our hair, and our bodies.” She went on to write, “That was something that was really important for her to teach us. I’m definitely teaching it to my daughter.”
