Is Taylor Townsend proving that motherhood can be a game-changer in professional sports?

The tennis community has a perception of WTA stars facing a dip in their performance post-pregnancy. Although it could be true in some cases, Taylor Townsend defies the odds. The last few years have proven to be quite productive for her in the doubles career. As she stands just one step behind knocking on the door to Wimbledon’s success, the WTA pro revealed the reason behind her increased comfort on the courts.

Taylor Townsend’s tennis career is touching new heights as she and her partner Katerina Siniakova, secured a spot in the women’s doubles final at Wimbledon 2024. They secured a remarkable victory over top-seeded Hsieh Su-wei and Elise Mertens to advance to Townsend’s first final at the grass major. While it was her third grand slam final after welcoming her baby boy, she revealed the aspect that helps her dominate.

In a recent interview with the Tennis Channel, Townsend shared how motherhood has influenced her game. “Since coming back from having my son, I just feel like it’s just new. I’m having a second career. I’ve just had a new approach, and I’m just having so much fun. Every time I step out on the court, I’m super comfortable. It always helps to have someone who’s an eight-time Grand Slam champion and is able to come up in the big moments; that really makes a difference,” she said.

Taylor Townsend made the world aware of her pregnancy back in October 2020 and welcomed her son Adyn Aubrey Johnson, on March 14, 2021. After a long time of gathering her strength back, she made a comeback to tennis in April 2022, and right from that moment, her performance graph followed an uptrend. She reached the finals of the 2022 US Open and the 2023 French Open, and she made it to the semifinals at the 2023 US Open in mixed doubles.

However, despite her achievements, the American misses her son while she is away from him. During the Madrid Open, the WTA star shared an update that gave out her emotions and immense love for the toddler. “I am missing my baby’s first day of jiu-jitsu. Crying real tears! Like seriously breaking my heart that I can’t be there,” Townsend wrote.

Taylor Townsend is now looking forward to an intense battle in the finals. With her son acting as a source of motivation, it is evident that she has an emotional and psychological upper hand. While her love for Adyn received recognition with the social media updates generally, fans also got to see a practical glimpse of it.
