Fans witnessed a huge upset in the second round of the Indian Wells 2021. Australia’s Alja Tomljanovic defeated WTA Chicago Fall Tennis Classic 2021 champion, Garbine Muguruza in three sets. The final scoreline of the match was 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Alja Tomljanovic converted six of her total ten break-points. Even after losing the second set badly, she made a brilliant comeback and gave absolutely no chance to Garbine Muguruza in the third set.

“Always a new moment”- Alja Tomljanovic after battling past Garbine Muguruza
In the post-match press conference, Tomljanovic expressed her emotions after defeating Muguruza. She highlighted that she is proud of the way she played and how she managed to stay calm under pressure.

“I get really happy when I get into these moments where I get nervous and I manage to stay calm and focus on just what’s on the task,” said Tomljanovic.
Interestingly, this is the Australian player’s fourth win against a top-10 player in 2021. Thus, she revealed that she took lessons from her previous defeats and executed her gameplay really well against the Spaniard.

“Even when I have in the past missed my chances or had really tough losses against the top players, you’re like, Well, okay, I’m going to learn from it. But the next time you’re in the same position, it’s never really the same. It’s always a new moment. But you can take the lessons before and apply it. The fact that it’s always new, in that moment you have to problem solve,” added the 28-year-old.

“Can come up with the goods when it matters”- Tomljanovic
In the same press conference, Tomljanovic emphasised that she is happy that she learnt a lot of things from her past losses and didn’t repeat the same mistakes again. She also stated that she is capable enough to beat even the best players on tour and feels confident after beating Muguruza.

“I’m just happy that I kind of took everything I could from all the losses before and just did kind of my best to react in a way that will benefit me. I knew that I could have, again, lost, putting myself in good situations. But I’m going out there knowing that I’m capable and that I can come up with the goods when it matters,” concluded Tomljanovic.

After her victory, Alja Tomljanovic will next face Tamara Zidansek in the third round of the Indian Wells. Will she be able to beat the odds and emerge as the winner of the tournament this year?
