Sloane Stephens seems to be struggling in reaching Charleston, South Carolina for the Charleston Open, a WTA 500 event. The American, who headed back home following her second-round loss in Miami, has been experiencing a series of unfortunate incidents. Not willing to stay alone, the 29-year-old has been giving constant updates via her Instagram account.

The struggles of Sloane Stephens
Ending the first phase of her 2022 hardcourt season, Stephens is now heading for the clay-court season. World No. 38 is set to begin her clay-court campaign at the Charleston Open. However, her struggles in reaching Charleston have been unreal. The American sensation, who was in her home in Plantation, Florida, yesterday had to board a direct flight from Fort Lauderdale to Charleston.
However, that wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Sloane opted for a rental car to drive to the airport terminal. However, even after waiting for 40 mins, the rental car shuttle didn’t show up, forcing her to walk toward the terminal. Elaborating on the incident in her first Instagram story, Stephens wrote, “This is me walking at 12:32 AM to the terminal because I waited 40 minutes for the rental car shuttle- which never showed and didn’t want to miss the flight, so I walked. BAD CHOICE but I’m alive to tell you about it.”
Walking down an empty street at midnight, the former World. 3 somehow managed to reach the airport. Even though she reached the airport safely, the worst was yet to come. Upon reaching the airport, Stephens learned that after being delayed 7 times, the flight she had to board had now been canceled.
Elaborating on the incident, Sloane in her second-story wrote, “Originally the flight was at 10:25- the only direct flight from Fort Lauderdale to Charleston. Got delayed 7 times. Delayed until 2:15 AM and finally got canceled at 1:04 AM.”
The alternative route
Learning about her flight cancellation, Sloane, left with no choice, headed back to the rental car terminal. However, now she was accompanied by a fellow American player, 20-year-old Katie Volymets. The two, who were primarily going to Charleston to start their clay-court season, headed to the rental car terminal.
Taking to her Instagram, Sloane uploaded a story featuring Katie and herself. She captioned the story, “Heading back to the rental car terminal with Katie Volynets.”

Reaching their place, Stephens slept at 3.55 AM. However, with the tournament starting tomorrow, she could not afford a delay. Instead of waiting for another flight, she opted to cover the distance by car. Getting up at 9.40 in the morning, Sloane took no time to get ready and be in the car by 10. Driving her way to Charleston, she was accompanied by Katie in the backseat.
In her fourth Instagram story, Sloane wrote, “Got to bed at 3:55 AM & slow rolled out of bed at 9:40 to get up and drive at IOAM. Currently still driving….Katie Volynets is putting up with me in the backseat now. Pray for her lol”
Stephens is the 13th seed at the Charleston Open. She will start her tournament campaign against Qinwen Zheng. On the other hand, the unseeded Katie Volynets will start her campaign against Magda Linette.
