The fans had to share the disappointment with Iga Swiatek as her Stuttgart Open title dreams went unfulfilled. Facing a semi-final defeat against Elena Rybakina, many were curious to calculate the drop in her ranking points, which, fortunately, was not a big one. Analyzing her situation in the present scenario, there are many who say that the competition levels are not high enough compared to the era ruled by the likes of Serena Williams. To this, her coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski came forward with a verdict.

Iga Świątek recently attained a massive feat of hitting the 100-week mark for maintaining her world no. 1 status. With strong players like Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka already on the scene, the statement came out to have no roots for her coach. “All great players are up to the standards of their times, you can’t compare era to era. You can talk hypothetically and argue, but it has no bearing on reality. Too many factors influence tennis performance,” Wiktorowski commented.

“The players compete with each other, so these opinions are very subjective. It would be different if we could compare the time or distance achieved.” Świątek’s era includes the top 5 who have separated themselves from their WTA peers with achievements. There’s Saba and Gauff of course, no. 5 Jessica Pegula, and as Rybakina proved with her Stuttgart victory, the World No. 4 will not be left behind.

As far as head-to-head stats are concerned, Świątek has defeated Coco Gauff 9 times out of the 10 matches, along with gaining six victories over the 9 matches played against Aryna Sabalenka.

Wiktorowski stressed the importance of focusing on Świątek’s performance within her current context. “But back to the point, we don’t fight expectations. We realize that this was, is, and will be the case. Both in the case of Iga and many other athletes. That’s why we accept it and cope,” he added, concluding the verdict on a pointless comparison.

As Świątek gears up for the upcoming tournament in Madrid, her coach remains unbothered by the debate and therefore continues to stay focused on her performance. As for the WTA player herself, she admitted the journey to the top was “frustrating” but “memorable” nonetheless!
