The WTA year-end number 1 will come down between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. GNP Seguros WTA Finals in Cancun will seal the fate of the player who will keep the top position in the WTA. The battle between the two players will certainly be nail-biting. Being the top two players currently, they will not be seeded in the same group. Therefore, they will meet either in the semifinal or the final.

The point difference between the two players is not large. The WTA Finals has a unique points system. Each match will earn the player 125 points, and each win will award the player 250 points in the round-robin. Points are stacked as they move forward. The semifinal will earn them 330 points, and the final gives them the chance to earn 420 points. So, who will prevail?

Sabalenka goes into the finals with 8,425 points, and Swiatek will enter with 7,795 points. The rank three of the WTA, Coco Gauff, is 2470 points behind the two. As it stands, she is out of the contention of the year-end number 1. If their form is to be taken into account, one could make the case for any of the two players.

Iga Swiatek

The Polish player won the French Open and the China Open this year. She has reached the final stages of all masters tournaments and reached the quarterfinal of the Wimbledon as well. She experienced a slump when the American hard court season rolled around. But she regained her form to win the final WTA Masters tournament of the year.

Aryna Sabalenka

The 25-year-old Belarusian beauty won the Australian Open and the Madrid Open this year. She played in the semifinal of two slams and faced Gauff in the final of the US Open. Since she attained rank 1, Sabalenka has not been able to play to her best extent. She crashed out of the China Open in the quarterfinal. She has stated that she feels the pressure of being at the top. Her performance in the WTA Finals will depend on how she handles her mentality.

There are many scenarios under which Sabalenka could keep her spot, or Iga Swiatek could force the Belarusian from the top. If Sabalenka reaches the finals with a 2-1 record in the round-robin, she will retain her rank, regardless of Swiatek’s results. Additionally, if the Polish player loses one match, Sabalenka can attain year-end number 1 by winning all of her round-robin matches or simply reaching the finals. But, what can Swiatek do to turn the tables around?

For Iga Swiatek to achieve the number 1 spot, she would need to win the title or reach the final with a perfect record, given Sabalenka loses all of her round-robin matches. If the Belarusian beauty wins two matches in her group, Swiatek would need to win the finals with a 2-1 record in the group stage. But if Sabalenka wins all matches in her group, Swiatek would need a perfect run.
