Is Iga Swiatek's focus on attitude over strategy a game-changer in the world of tennis coaching?

When Iga Swiatek parted ways with Tomasz Wiktorowski on October 4, the tennis world was captivated by a pressing question: Who would guide the world number one next? Speculation ran wild as fans and analysts wondered who could match the reigning queen’s competitive spirit and nurture her talent. After days of anticipation, Swiatek, on October 17, has finally unveiled the exciting news—Wim Fissette, former coach of Naomi Osaka, would be the new addition to her team.

Swiatek took to her Twitter handle to share this amazing news with her fans and to end the long-time misery of finding a perfect coach. She wrote, “So, I have news for you today, as I’m excited and motivated to start a new chapter. I’m happy to announce that Wim Fissette is joining our team. As you know, I’m preparing for the WTA Finals, but my perspective is, as always, long-term, not short-term.” The announcement went on.

Additionally, Swiatek offered a novel viewpoint on her hunt, highlighting that Fissette’s disposition and cooperative nature were what ultimately made the difference, rather than just strategies. She added, “I want to say that l’m very excited and looking forward to working with Wim. He seems to have a great attitude, vision and huge experience at a very top level of tennis. It’s always crucial to try and get to know each other better but we’re off to a good start and I can’t wait to compete soon.”

Wim Fissette’s last coaching stunt was with former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka, who achieved incredible success under his tutelage. The two worked together in two chapters — first from the 2019 offseason to the summer of 2022. During this period, she went on to win the 2020 US Open and the 2021 Australian Open and also reached the finals of the 2020 Cincinnati Open and the 2022 Miami Open. In an attempt to recapture their former magic, the couple got back together in 2023 ahead of her return to tennis following the July 2023 birth of her daughter, Shai. But last month, their collaboration unexpectedly ended, ushering in a new chapter for each of them.

Tomasz Wiktorowski, on the other hand, is starting a new chapter in his life by accepting a managerial position at a well-known tennis academy close to the gorgeous Zegrze Reservoir. Owned by millionaire Jozef Wojciechowski, the facility has sixteen top-notch courts, providing Wiktorowski with a new challenge in a disciplined, secure setting. This new position offers a welcome change after years of the constant travel that comes with coaching on the professional tour.

Regarding Iga Swiatek‘s separation from Tomasz Wiktorowski, the main concern was if there was more to the story—had tension or bad blood emerged between them?

Tomasz Wiktorowski opens up about his split with Iga Swiatek

Only a few days after Iga Swiatek made her unexpected news, Tomasz Wiktorowski discussed the split and offered his insight into the circumstances. Wiktorowski said in an interview with WP SportoweFakty, “There has been a lot of speculation and insinuation… definitely too much considering that the statement issued very precisely defines our decision. It is enough to read it with understanding, and not with the intention of looking for sensation. Our end of cooperation took place with respect for both parties and no fakes will change that.”

Then, he addressed the rumors about Świątek’s psychologist, Daria Abramowicz’s involvement. “I think that we generally had very good relations in the team. During three years of intensive cooperation, it is impossible to avoid difficult situations, but even then we always found a way to reach an agreement and get back on track. Iga and everything related to preparing a player at the highest level have always been a priority for us,” the coach stated.
