Records are meant to be broken. No one knows this better among the current generation than the second seed

Iga Swiatek. She recently equaled a sought-after record that was held by the former world No.1 Serena Williams. Winning titles has become an ordinary affair for the Pole. Earlier, Swiatek held up the World’s No.1 position for 75 consecutive weeks until Aryna Sabalenka took it from her back at the US Open.

On Sunday, the China Open finally concluded. Swiatek came on top as she defeated Liudmila Samsonova in the finals. Winning this title pushed the 4-time Grand Slam winner directly into Williams’ league.

Iga Swiatek makes her way alongside Serena Williams

The 23-time Grand Slam winner, Serena Williams, became the first ever to win 5 or more WTA titles in back-to-back seasons. Now, after almost 7 years, her record was finally matched by the 22-year-old Swiatek.

After this monumental achievement, the official Twitter handle of the WTA tweeted, “@iga_swiatek is the first player to win FIVE or more titles in BACK-TO-BACK seasons since Serena Williams in 2015 and 2016!”

Swiatek won 8 titles in 2022. However, what makes her the best is how she keeps winning, despite losing her way in certain tournaments. Winning the finals in Beijing made Iga the only player to share this feat with Serena.

Undoubtedly, Swiatek is an exceptional player. However, this wasn’t the first time she matched Williams. Swiatek in her 100-match spell equalled Serena’s win-loss record of 87-13. Her journey of winning titles alone in 2023 was not an easy one.

Swiatek’s crusade throughout 2023

Taking a look at her journey to reach here, it seems like Swiatek knew what she was doing. Iga has many big wins in 2023. Earlier in the year, she won the Qatar Open after defeating the American Jessica Pegula. Soon after, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka at the 2023 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. From a different perspective, it looks like she avenged her previous loss. Later, Swiatek made Karolina Muchova bite the dust to win the French Open.

The Poland Open and the China Open were equally ecstatic triumphs for the Pole. Laura Siegemund competed against Iga for the Poland title. However, she remained unsuccessful and lost to Iga. With a trail of multiple titles to her name, it was time for Iga to set the record straight.

To keep winning 5 or more titles in back-to-back seasons is not an easy task. It requires one to be consistent no matter what. Iga Swiatek has proved herself many times and this win will only add to her grandeur. Do you think she will match the other records of the legendary Serena Williams?
