The WTA Tour has entered a new era with the rise of a new generation, spearheaded by Iga Swiatek. The 20-year-old Pole has taken the tennis world by storm ever since her stunning Roland Garros victory in 2020. After a blistering start to this season, there is a lot more in store for the current World No. 1.

Swiatek is on a rampant run ever since her loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai, losing 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4). She is two wins away from creating history for one of the longest winning streaks this century.

Swiatek joins an elite list

With her 33rd straight win, the world No. 1 moves within two wins of the longest streak held by Venus Williams. The American went on an unbelievable 35-match win streak in 2000.

Swiatek’s quarter-final win moves her up to the third spot in the list. Venus’ sister and 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams, is on 34 victories from the 2013 season. Serena fell one win short of her sister, losing to Germany’s Sabine Lisicki at Wimbledon that year.

The World No.1 will now face No.20 seed Daria Kasatkina, who beat Veronika Kudermetova. Swiatek looked more composed in a 6-3, 6-2 quarters victory over American Jessica Pegula. After the match, she was quoted saying, “For sure, I think it was my most solid match here, so I’m pretty happy with the performance.”

“I feel like I’m in the right place and that place that I kind of worked for really hard. Being in the semifinal, it’s a new experience because it [doesn’t] happen very often and I hope I’m going to use my chance.” she added.
