The highly anticipated WTA Finals has started and some of the best tennis players in the world will battle it out for supremacy here in Cancun, Mexico. However, just ahead of the start of the tournament, all the participants attended the Gala event where they were spotted together for a photoshoot. What surprised many was the bold fashion choice that Iga Swiatek sported at the event.
While everyone donned variations of white dresses, Iga Swiatek came out and did something completely out of the box. Fans and commentators couldn’t get enough of the elegant red form-fitting piece. However, later, the former World Number 1 explained the reason behind her choosing the red dress for the gala.

In a recent interview, Iga Swiatek shed light on her fashion statement at the WTA Finals Gala. She notably stood out as the sole player donning a striking red dress in a sea of white attires. She revealed that she had selected the red dress months before the event.
The Pole further went ahead to mention that she liked the red dress very much and it pretty much gave her the Mexican vibe. Not only this, but she also mentioned that it was from a Polish designer, and the moment she saw it, she fell in love with the outfit.
“I didn’t want to make a big fuss about my dress or anything. I’m happy I picked this one. It’s from a Polish fashion designer. I loved it from the first time I saw it. It’s also a little bit of a Mexican vibe with the red. I think it was a nice choice. It was the first time I wore something that was so slim.” said Iga Swiatek about her head-turning sartorial choices at the WTA Finals party.
Iga Swiatek on why she was the only one wearing red at the WTA Finals Gala:
“Honestly there was no story. I picked the dress a couple months before. Then WTA emailed us that we should all wear white. We were like ‘really?’ We’re not getting married or something 😂. We asked them… pic.twitter.com/hF5ehbYQEU

Swiatek, who came in ready to shine at the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico, stunned everyone with her bold fashion choices. However, the almost-faux pas was not all her doing since she looked the odd one out with her red dress on. Swiatek subsequently shed light on the miscommunications that happened with the authorities as well.

In the same interview, Iga Swiatek reflected on the fact that they got an email from the WTA where they asked all the players to choose a white dress for the photo shoot. However, the decision was not accepted with great enthusiasm by the players, as they went ahead and mailed the authorities over the choice of dresses.

A later response from the authorities allowed the players to wear whatever they wanted to at the Gala. However, it was only Swiatek who really looked apart in red. The event was full of twists and turns as the players had a tough choice of which dress to choose; while the authorities directed white as the color code for the event, a later email overruled this. Going by the magnitude of controversies the WTA finds itself in over the year-capping tournament, this may be a small glitch, but it seems like the organizers really stirred the pot with this year’s communications and preparations.
