There is no doubt that the fierce rivalry between Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova has always managed to captivate the audience during the 80 and 90s era of tennis. However, despite being involved in heated rivalry on the court, the American tennis legends have shared a sisterly bond.

They have had a close friendship for a long period, thus both are familiar with all of the subtleties of one another’s on- and off-court personalities. It was also made quite evident in the book titled, ‘Being Myself,’ in which the Czech-American tennis star brought to light the latent side of her old rival and friend, Evert.

The book, ‘Being Myself,’ perfectly portrays the illustrious tennis journey of the 18 singles Grand Slam champion, Martina Navratilova. In that book, the former Czech-American tennis player also talked about her old rivals in the women’s circuit, especially her close friend, Chris Evert.

Navratilova revealed how Evert has always managed to maintain her “sweetheart image” throughout her journey on the court. She said, “Chris has always been able to live up to her sweetheart image, knowing what to say and when to say it.”

However, in private, Evert was much more ‘fun’ while not being a ‘prude’ according to her close friend. She said, “In private, she’s got a great sense of humor. She’s fun, and she is not exactly what you’d call a prude. The public doesn’t know that if you give her a glass of wine, she can tell a good story with the best of us.”

In the process, she also brought to light how the ‘Ice Maiden’ was a totally different person in the dressing room. Navratilova stated, “The Chris the public sees is not exactly the Chris we know in the dressing room. In public, she always seems on an even keel, whether she’s joking with the male reporters or smiling at the fans.”

Navratilova also revealed that she was the opposite of her friend, Evert

In the book, the Tennis Hall of Famer also said that she had a contradicting personality from Evert. Unlike the ‘Ice Maiden,’ Navratilova revealed that she was very blunt in articulating her view on various matters in the tennis community including her criticism of prize money at Wimbledon in 1983.

She said, “I say what I feel, whether it’s revealing that I was suffering from toxoplasmosis at the 1982 US Open or criticizing the amount of prize money at Wimbledon in 1983, which got me into hot water with everybody.”

Due to the same, she was often a target of public scrutiny, whereas her friend, Evert always managed to make her point without getting involved in any contentious incident.
