The WTA tour this season has been a whirlwind of surprises, with unexpected champions and rising stars stealing the show. It kicked off with Madison Keys, stunning the tennis world by clinching her first GS title, toppling the defending champion Aryna Sabalenka at Melbourne Park. Then, the teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva dominated the tour, winning consecutive WTA 1000 titles. But the latest twist came at the Miami Open, where 19-year-old Filipino wildcard Alexandra Eala shocked the newly crowned AO champ Keys with a commanding victory. And, right after her breakthrough win, Eala reflected on her journey that led to this career-defining moment.
Madison Keys entered this year’s Miami Open fresh off a tough SF loss to the World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at Indian Wells. But that was the only loss the American powerhouse had suffered in her last 18 matches until she ran into a fearless Alexandra Eala.
The 19-year-old Filipino wildcard, held her ground in a fiercely contested opening set, seizing a crucial break at 5-4 to seal it. From there, the 134th-ranked teenager took full control, breaking Keys twice to deliver the tournament’s biggest shocker. As Keys’ final forehand sailed wide, Eala roared in joy.

Speaking to the Tennis Channel after the match, she said, “There have been many times that I have had a good win for my career and then not so great the match after. So I try not to think about it too much you know. It’s just another match. There have been many times where I would have been able to play like Madison like Ostapenko but I couldn’t because I lost the round before. And now looking back when you connect the dots you going backwards I feel it’s because I wasn’t ready at the time you know kind of God say I wasn’t ready and now I have to believe that I am because I have been given this opportunity and work for the opportunity.”

Hailing from a country without a deep-rooted tennis legacy at all, the 19-year-old Filipino has defied the odds, proving herself as a rising force on the WTA tour. Following her stunning victory over a Grand Slam champion, an emotional Eala sprinted to her team in celebration. Overjoyed, she dedicated the moment to her parents, who had woken up in the early morning hours to watch history unfold back home: “Mom, Dad, I did it… My god!” she tearfully exclaimed in her on-court interview.
Eala’s triumph certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. The official X account of the Rafa Nadal Academy, where Eala honed her craft, proudly highlighted her milestone, posting, “Once again… THE BIGGEST WIN OF HER CAREER! 😍 Alex Eala defeats another Grand Slam Champion!! Alexandra Eala shared her gratitude towards the Rafa Nadal Academy
Alexandra Eala’s journey to the WTA spotlight was shaped on the training grounds of the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, Mallorca. For 7 years, she practiced her craft, battling against top-tier young talents and learning firsthand from the 22-time GS champion himself, a fellow lefty who became both a mentor and an inspiration for her. Her 2023 graduation was a landmark moment for the Filipino, graced by Nadal and then-world number 1 Iga Swiatek.
Though she now competes on the global stage, Mallorca remains Eala’s training hub, providing the foundation for her relentless pursuit of greatness. Following her R32 victory in Miami, the Filipino didn’t hesitate to acknowledge the institution that molded her into a fearless competitor.

“My family should take credit for the foundation that they laid out before they sent me there. But of course, the academy was able to build on that foundation in such a way that I’m able to be where I am now. I think the combination of everything that I’ve been through since I started tennis is what has led to this moment and what has led to me having all these opportunities,” she said at the post-match press conference.
With Eala’s fearless run and a potential top-100 breakthrough on the line in Miami, could she pull off another stunner against Paula Badosa in the pre-quarterfinals?
