Further, her caliber still serves as a parameter to determine greatness. However, unlike Evert’s almost perfect professional life, her personal life saw some rough patches.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion wandered a lot in search of her soulmate. The first person in whom she tried to find her forever was her fellow tennis ace, John Lloyd. People believe the main reason behind them parting ways was the difference in their achievements, but Lloyd believes otherwise.

Was Evert’s success hurting Lloyd’s ego?

Evert was the best on the women’s tour whereas the British professional couldn’t outweigh the legends of that time. Therefore, fans assumed that he would be plagued with the bitter feeling of not being as good as his wife.

But when asked about the same in a recent interview, he said, “You don’t think of it at the time and then you go to places. When you marry someone who’s as famous as that, you have to swallow your ego and leave it a door, the front door.”

Thereafter, Lloyd added, “There were times when I was referred to Mr. Evert, and all that sort of stuff. I’m pretty easygoing with that stuff. Rather than get confrontational about it, I just sort of let it roll off the back, you know. I got a fair amount of celebrity as British No 1. English style, British style should I say.”
