‘I Was Angry’ – Serena Williams Revealed How Alexis Ohanian’s Marriage Proposal Came at a Really Wrong Time for Her

American tennis legend Serena Williams recently played her last match. The 41-year-old has plans to dedicate more time to her young family now. After the birth of her daughter Olympia, Serena has always talked about the challenges of managing motherhood with her career. However, once there was a time when Serena didn’t even want to get married and start a family.

The former world number 1 was enjoying her game and had a full focus on her career. Back in 2017, after her engagement with Alexis Ohanian, Serena revealed how she reacted to Ohanian’s proposal.

Engagement is generally a very important and emotional moment in anyone’s life. People not only plan it for days but also remember it throughout their lives. The proposal in Serena’s case was equally memorable. However, it was a bit different from what anyone would expect.

After her engagement, Serena gave her opinion on marriage. “I actually never felt pressure to get married,” Williams said. She further added, “I can’t say that I am the marrying type of person, I love my life, I love my freedom. I heard that kind of changes … I love my career, I always felt I don’t want anything to interfere with that. I’ve actually been so career-oriented.”

Further, the former world number one revealed how Ohanian’s proposal got her angry. “In fact, when he proposed, I was almost angry. Not almost, I was angry because it was right in the middle of my training season. I was like, I’ve got to win the Australian Open. I can’t fly to Rome because he wanted to take me to Rome,” Serena recalled.

Serena’s first meeting with Ohanian

After her retirement, Serena Williams recently appeared on the Drew Barrymore Show. Drew asked Serena about her first meeting with her husband, Alexis Ohanian. The 41-year-old recalled it was back in 2015. Serena was in Rome where she met her future husband at a restaurant.

As Serena remembered, the restaurant was completely empty and Ohanian walked in with his laptop. He came in and sat next to Serena’s gang. The former world number one and her friends were not happy with the only stranger in the room and they tried to get rid of him.

Serena recalls how they faked a rat being there in the restaurant. However, Ohanian didn’t care, or possibly he understood they were faking it.
