In 2019, the young American star Coco Gauff loudly announced her arrival to professional tennis. She defeated Venus Williams in straight sets in Wimbledon, throwing the 7-time Grand Slam champion out in the first round. Her family was elated, and she wasn’t able to believe the feat herself. Ever since then, she has been under the radar of every tennis fan. For Gauff, the match required extreme focus and after the match; she was on cloud nine.

Gauff recently detailed what went through her mind when she was going up to shake Williams’ hand after her victory.

In her interview with ‘HER WAY’, Gauff talked about her idol Venus Williams, and how it felt to find out she would play against her. Moreover, she opened up about how she felt immediately after overcoming the challenge of the legendary American star.

As per Gauff, her victory left her thrilled. She recalls her hands shaking and said that people told her she shook Williams’ hand for a long time. She didn’t think it was that long, but watched the tape and saw the truth.

It was like such a thrill like; I remember my hand was shaking, uh, I people were saying how long I shook her hand, it didn’t feel that long to me, but when I looked back, yeah, it was pretty long but I literally I grabbed her hand, and I was like I knew before the match I was going to tell her this I just didn’t think it would be on the winning end of it.

The American also talked about the rollercoaster of emotions she went through after she found out she was going to face Venus Williams. Gauff said she felt jittery as she got a wildcard entry into the tournament and, finding it out at the last minute added to the craziness. She further added that she only realized the reality of facing off against her idol by the time they were walking down the corridor.
