Martina Navratilova is a legendary name in the world of tennis, having won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 major women’s doubles titles, and 10 major mixed doubles titles. However, her accomplishments aren’t limited to the tennis court – Navratilova has also been a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility, particularly in the world of professional sports. Now, her wife, Julia Lemigova, has decided to take a similar step.

In 2015, Navratilova married her long-time partner, Julia Lemigova, in a beautiful and intimate ceremony in New York City. The couple had been together for nearly a decade before tying the knot, and their union marked an important milestone for LGBTQ+ rights, as it was one of the first high-profile same-sex marriages in the world of professional sports. With Pride Month in virtue, she showed her interest in attending the parade.

Navratilova has been open about her sexuality since 1981 when she came out as a bisexual, a courageous decision at a time when homosexuality was still highly stigmatized. Over the years, she has used her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and fight against discrimination and prejudice. In 2014, she famously spoke out against Russia’s anti-gay laws during the Sochi Winter Olympics and has continued to be an outspoken advocate for the community.

Lemigova, a former Miss USSR beauty queen and successful entrepreneur, has also been a source of strength and support for Navratilova. So with pride month and the energy around it, Julia clearly displayed her interest in being a part of the pride parade. In a phone interview with the Miami Herald, Julia mentioned, “With all the challenges that we’re facing in South Florida, to our lives and our liberties, it’s so important that we stand strong together. Pride is a call to action”.

She went on to explain the situation of the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and added, “Our community is under attack in Florida. I can’t sit silently”. With her first pride march being in 2001, Julia has always made it a point to attend these events every year. She will be attending the Wilton Manors’ Stonewall Pride on Saturday. Her plans also include joining the local HIV/AIDS advocate Ederick Johnson as a grand marshal at the event. However, her significant other won’t be there to support her during the march.
