One such story involves the failure of Hipmunk, his online travel agency, founded in 2010. Ohanian was partly motivated by the success his father had enjoyed in the same sector. Nearly six years after the business was acquired by Concur, after failing to adapt to the increasing use of OTAs in the industry, Ohanian recently recalled how it felt to have his own startup overshadowed by his father’s business.

However, the Reddit co-founder eventually paid a price for stepping into his father’s territory and had his company bought out in part by Concur. Ohanian recently attended the Yahoo Finance Global Conference 2023, where he talked about how the rapid growth of technology hurts .

However, the American businessman mentioned ChatGPT and recalled an instance from the day prior about how they were using artificial intelligence to plan a trip during the interview..

He said, “I was literally planning a vacation with my wife, yesterday using ChatGPT. I had an act as a premium concierge travel agent, which also hurts my heart a bit. My father has been a travel agent his entire life, thankfully he just retired. I even started a travel search company called Hipmunk. My dad’s travel agency outlived my startup. it hurt the ego.”

However, this isn’t the first time the Reddit co-founder has taken his father’s success as a motivating factor. Last year, he shared a touching message for his father on Twitter to honor his commitment and perseverance in building his business.

Being an entrepreneur is a challenging occupation and not everyone can do it. So, the Reddit co-founder shared his father’s entrepreneurial life lesson with his followers last year via a tweet. He began by thanking his father and telling how, when he was a senior in high school, his father founded a modest travel firm.
