The drama continues to unfold in the tennis world. Earlier this month, Wimbledon witnessed some controversial events. On one occasion saw protesters storming the courts to halt a match. While another event saw a horrifying accident, taking an eight-year-old schoolgirl’s life near the Wimbledon Championships’ site. And just recently, another controversy captured the tennis world’s eyes.
With the grass-court season coming to an end with the conclusion of Wimbledon, tennis action has moved back onto the clay courts. However, there was no shortage of crazy scenes, as an unusual incident occurred at WTA 250 Hungarian Grand Prix. In the first-round encounter, local star Amarissa Toth was up against China’s Shuai Zhang. Midway through the match, the latter was reduced to tears, following which she decided to retire. In what was a closely fought encounter, Toth was leading 6-5 as the incident took place. The Hungarian erased a line mark in what appeared to be a close line call. The chair umpire stepped onto the court to make a decision and confirmed that the ball had landed outside the line. However, Zhang was not in agreement with the call and chose to speak with the tournament supervisor.
Meanwhile, Toth went on to erase the ball mark. This disturbed Zhang and a physio was even called to have a look at her condition. Subsequently, Zhang decided to retire amid a vocal crowd’s jeers.
Hours later, her opponent hit back at her, saying, “I didn’t understand why she made such a fuss out of it, that she wanted to overrule the judge’s decision. I don’t understand why she didn’t accept it, but she made trouble for herself”.

The match lasted close to an hour as Zhang’s retirement proved to be a blessing in disguise for the local star who was locked in a see-saw battle with her Chinese opponent. Both the players found it difficult to hold on to their serves. While Zhang was broken on three occasions, Toth failed to hold her serve twice.
