Last year’s US Open finalist, Leylah Fernandez is playing some great tennis at the French Open 2022. She reached the quarter-final for the first time in her career after defeating the 20-year-old American Amanda Anisimova, in today’s fourth-round match.

After seeing their match, 18-time Grand Slam champion, Martina Navratilova talked greatly about the level of this match. Prompting Fernandez to appreciate Navratilova’s praise for her game.

After her win against Anisimova, Fernandez had an interview with the Tennis Channel during which, the interviewer said, “Martina Navratilova just said that’s as good a match she’s seen this tournament.”
When asked about Navratilova’s comments, she said, “Honestly, yes. It was a very high-quality match. I think both of us were hitting winners left, right, and center and Amanda is an amazing player. I’m sure she’s an inspiration to many, many young generations, including me. So, I’m very happy that I was able to raise my level when it mattered and I was just able to have fun on court and put on a good show for them.”
Later, when asked about replicating her US Open run last year, she further added, “I think I’m just gonna enjoy the moment like I did in the US Open. hopefully, I get another chance to play here at the Philippe-Chatrier and just to play in front of an amazing crowd.”

Notably, the fourth round match between Fernandez and Anisimova almost lasted 2 hours. The 19-year-old Canadian won the first set, 6-3. However, the American star came back strongly in the second set, winning it 6-4. After a tough battle in the third set, Leylah finally won the third set and the match by a scoreline of 6-3 4-6 6-3.

Notably, last year, Leylah shocked the world by reaching the final of the US Open. Unfortunately, she lost to Emma Raducanu in the final. Despite the loss, she gained massive popularity among tennis fans.

Now, she is again looking to make a similar, if not better, run at the ongoing French Open. In the quarter-final, she will play the 28-year-old Italian, Martina Trevisan, who’s currently ranked 59 in the WTA rankings. If the Canadian star can beat her next opponent, she will reach the semifinal of a Grand Slam for the second time in her career.
