Is Iga Swiatek's one-dimensional play holding her back from true greatness on all surfaces?

Ever since Iga Swiatek dropped a major bombshell about a change in her backroom staff, there have been a lot of talks about her current form and future prospects. Last week, the Polish star announced an end to her partnership with her long-time coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski after a successful 3-year partnership. One of the major reasons behind this separation was Swiatek’s poor run of form lately. The World Number 1 is without a title after winning the French Open title earlier this year. After Swiatek announced the separation from her coach, a Polish tennis expert, Tomasz Wolfke, reflected on her playing style and pointed out the drawbacks.

During an interview with Super Express, Wolfke was asked to comment about Swiatek’s separation from Wiktorowski despite their successful partnership. While he agreed that the poor results must have been the reason behind their separation, Wolfke also revealed that Swiatek’s playing style was very bland with no variations.

He went on to add, “We don’t really know what happened in this team, but three years of cooperation in tennis is such a completely normal period, and during this period Iga and Tomek achieved stunning success together. However, recently there have been reservations about Iga’s playing style. I even always said in an open text that her tennis is too one-dimensional, but you can’t have a grudge against her either, because there is also a tennis school that says that we practice painfully what we do best and beat everyone with these two or three strokes, just like in the case of Iga.”

Swiatek has herself revealed that she is looking for a foreign coach to replace Tomasz Wiktorowski and not a Polish coach. A few names, such as Wim Fissette, Naomi Osaka’s ex-coach, and Brad Gilbert, Coco Gauff’s former coach, have emerged as potential replacements. However, the World No. 1 has yet to make the final move in this regard, as her search continues.

Wolfke, however, is not the only tennis expert who believes Swiatek needed a change in her coaching staff to add to her versatility. Tennis commentator Barbara Schett has also backed Swiatek with her decision and emphasized that she needed a fresh pair of eyes.

Barbara Schett on Iga Swiatek: ‘Every detail matters’

While Swiatek has been a force to reckon with on the clay court, she has struggled on the grass court and the hard court. Interestingly, four of her five Grand Slam titles have come at the French Open, while the remaining one was at the US Open in 2022. As a result, Schett highlighted that there is much scope for improvement for the Polish star.

Is Iga Swiatek's one-dimensional play holding her back from true greatness on all surfaces?

Have an interesting take?

She said, “I was really disappointed with her performance at Wimbledon and the US Open, where she played one-dimensionally and couldn’t adjust her tactics. She was committed but helpless. There is definitely room for improvement in her game. Iga is number one in the world, but she still needs to develop her game on grass and hard courts. And let’s be honest, that hasn’t happened in the last year or two. She’s looking for something new, a fresh perspective because at this level, every detail matters.”

Amid these uncertain times, Swiatek has also skipped the Asian leg of the WTA Tour. She’ll look to end the search for her new coach quickly as some important events, including the WTA Tour Finals, are set to come up later this year.
