‘Heartbreaking for Me’- Leylah Fernandez Announces Unfortunate News Ahead of US Open Swing Commencement

Leylah Fernandez, the Canadian tennis ace, is amongst the high-caliber next-generation players. It took her just four years to enter the top 20 of the WTA. Further, she already has had a quarterfinal run in the French Open and a finale run in the US Open.

However, Fernandez’s upward career graph for this year got stuck at a plateau owing to her foot injury. She incurred a fracture to her foot by the end of the clay court season and still hasn’t recovered from it. However, the unwanted halt seems to have not broken Canadian’s spirit. As she gave even sad news with an optimistic smile.

Leylah has missed the entire grass swing because of the gruesome foot injury and, unfortunately, will miss the upcoming Atlanta Open as well. She took it upon herself to inform fans about her withdrawal from the event and said, “Hey guys, so I just wanna give you a quick update. While my foot is recovering, I am following my doctor’s orders, which are that I will not be able to compete for the next coming weeks.”

“I am very sad to say that I will not be in Atlanta. Even though it’s heartbreaking for me, I hope that everyone, the fans, and players, will enjoy their time at the tournament. And I want to wish coco good luck.” She added.

The 19-year-old, if in a good condition, would have locked horns with the American tennis ace Coco Gauff in Atlanta. Now, Taylor Townsend, the former world no. 61 will replace her for the exhibition match against the 2022 French Open runner-up.

Leylah’s noteworthy runs

After starting the year by giving a subpar performance in the Australian Open, the  2021 Us Open finalist fueled up for the Monterrey Open. She outclassed every opponent in straight sets to reach the finals and claimed the trophy 6 (5)-7 (7), 6-4, 7 (7)-6 (3).

Thereafter Fernandez executed a decent run in the Indian Wells. She made up to the round of 16 in the WTA 1000 event and then jumped into the clay court season. Over there, after failing to leave an impact on the Masters, she bounced back in the Grand Slam.
