Venus and Serena?Williams own a large portion of records in tennis history. Players dream to own one of those records and most of them fail to do so. It’s also pretty certain that successful players own some negative records at the same time. For instance, Ivan Lendl, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic have all lost 11 slam finals, the most in men’s tennis history. Similarly, the Williams sisters own a not-so-impressive record to their name.

Well, the sisters are not alone anymore! They finally have a company, as Ons Jabeur joins them to become the third player to own this record in the last 25 years. But, what exactly is the record in question?

After losing the 2023 Wimbledon final to Marketa Vondrousova, Jabeur became the third woman to lose back-to-back Wimbledon finals in the last 25 years. Venus Williams lost two consecutive finals to sister Serena Williams in 2002 and 2003. Whereas, Serena lost to Angelique Kerber and Simona Halep in 2018 and 2019.

Quite an elite company for Jabeur there at the top. Missing out on the ultimate prize in tennis by fine margins on two consecutive occasions must be a hard pill to swallow. But, even the best of the players have suffered such defeats and Jabeur could look up to them as an inspiration to bounce back. In fact, there is a major reason behind only three players holding this record.

Why do only three players share this record?

Well, one must be curious as to why only three players have held this record in the last 25 years. To clear your curiosity, Jabeur, Venus and Serena Williams are also the only three players who have reached back-to-back Wimbledon finals in the last 20 years. The three players were good enough to reach the finals twice and hence why they own this record.

So, the infamous record is not so infamous after all. Williams sisters have also won twelve Wimbledon singles titles between themselves and this record does not affect their legacy by any means. Jabeur on the other hand, still has time on her side to win her maiden slam title.
