The Wimbledon dream comes to a harsh end for Beatriz Haddad Maia. After a defiant performance in her round 3 encounter against, Sorana Cirstea, she was all set to cause problems for the defending champion. However, it was not quite meant to be. Five games into her last 16 match against Elena Rybakina, Haddad Maia was forced to retire.

The Brazilian who won two titles on grass last year faced an early round one exit at Wimbledon at the same time. This year she started off slowly but gained enough momentum for the Championship. It was quite heartbreaking to see how things ended for Haddad Maia.

The Brazilian could not sustain playing for more than 18 minutes. She called her physio during the changeover at 1-4. Her team looked worried and the inevitable happened. Haddad Maia grabbed her lower back suggesting some sort of discomfort. She was forced to retire. The pain did not allow Haddad Maia to carry her bags off the court and left the court in tears.

Rybakina rushed to her side of the net to console her and offer her a hug. The two players had a warm embrace before the world number 13 made her way out of the court.

Haddad Maia was in great form coming into the match. She also had a 2-0 winning head-to-head against Elena Rybakina and this could’ve been a nail-biting encounter if not for the injury. The gracious defending champion also hoped for a speedy recovery for the Brazilian in her post-match interview.

Those were really generous words from Rybakina for her injured opponent. It looked like a bad injury and just at the worst possible time for Haddad Maia. A speedy recovery would be great for the Brazilian and WTA as well as the US Open is not far away.
