Elina Svitolina considers her Wimbledon campaign a “magical, magical tournament.” Despite missing her chance to seal a place in the finals, the Ukrainian player cherished the support she got from the fans. Standing by her on this critical journey was her significant other, French tennis player Gaël Monfils, and their charming nine-month-old little girl, Skaï. However, the focus moved from her triumphs to her position on handshakes during the competition.

Svitolina had made it clear that she wouldn’t greet players from Russia and Belarus. She considered her stance as standing in solidarity with her country, Ukraine, amidst its war against Russia. Her words went under scrutiny after she triumphed over Belarusian player Victoria Azarenka at Wimbledon. Smatterings of boos reverberated through the stands when she avoided warmly greeting Azarenka. Svitolina has since communicated her anxiety for compatriots who are battling for the freedom of Ukraine.
