In the high-stakes world of professional tennis, trust is crucial. Players trust their skills, fans trust their favorite athletes, and everyone relies on the fairness of the game. But now, that trust is wavering as Maria Sakkari, the talented Greek tennis player, shines at the San Diego Open, all while raising concerns about the people who make sure tennis is played fairly.

This unease stems from the shocking news of her friend and fellow tennis star Simona Halep being banned from the sport for four years by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).

Although Maria Sakkari is in the spotlight for her great performance at the San Diego Open, her recent comments about how the ITIA deals with doping cases have shocked the tennis community. During a press conference after defeating Camila Osorio in the Round of 16, Sakkari shared her concerns about doping authorities. These comments came in light of Simona Halep’s recent suspension.

“One thing I can tell you for sure is the way they’re handling every situation with any player, any athlete, it’s just scary. We’re gonna get to a point where we’re not even gonna be taking electrolytes. Thankfully, I haven’t been in that position. I never want to be… I’ve been very careful with everything that has to do with supplements,” Sakkari stated.

Stressed out about the entire situation, Sakkari added, “I wake up almost every night to use the bathroom. If that’s close to my time slot, I’m just thinking ‘Do I go? Do I not go? Do I just wait if they come?’ It’s just very stressful.” Sakkari talked about the ordeal and how it has affected her decision-making abilities.

Sakkari’s honest remarks highlight the challenges professional athletes face when dealing with the complex world of anti-doping rules. Her concerns about the whereabouts app, which is supposed to remind athletes of their testing times, resonate with those who have similar travel schedules. On the other hand, Sakkari has now made it to the Quarter Finals at the San Diego Open and will now be facing the lesser-known American player, Emma Navarro who is currently ranked outside of the Top 1000 in WTA.
