American women have been stealing the spotlight in the 2025 WTA season. Half of this year’s WTA titles so far? Snatched by Americans. From Madison Keys finally breaking through with her first Grand Slam win to Amanda Anisimova lifting the trophy in Doha, it’s been one proud moment after another. Now, the spotlight’s on Charleston—and surprise, surprise—it’s an all-American final. Jessica Pegula and Sofia Kenin will face off for the title. The last time two Americans met in the Charleston final? Back in 1990, when Martina Navratilova took down a young Jennifer Capriati. And Sofia Kenin is ecstatic to be part of this history!
Moving into the final wasn’t easy for either of them, but both found their way in very different styles. For Pegula, it was about getting over a hump. She had lost in the Charleston semifinals in each of the last two years. This time, she broke the curse.
Facing No. 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, Pegula came back twice from a breakdown in the third set and closed out the match 6-2, 2-6, 7-5. The top seed showed grit and some serious staying power. Meanwhile, Sofia Kenin had a different route, one that didn’t need a full three sets. She was leading Amanda Anisimova 5-2 in the first set of their semifinal when the No. 8 seed retired due to a right hip injury.

Talking to Tennis Channel, the 26-year-old Kenin said, “Well, one American is going to win the final, so that’s already great. And one American is going to be in the finals, so I think it’s great for American tennis. I think it’s great for everyone—you know, the crowd and everyone.” And herself?
“So I mean, I’m excited for the match. Tomorrow I play Jessie…she played well, obviously. So I’ve got nothing to lose. I’m going to come out swinging. And, you know, if you can make the conditions a little bit easier, would be nice to have a fair shot tomorrow—then I would appreciate that.”

Pegula is also embracing it.

“It shows the depth that Americans have right now, especially on the women’s side,” said Pegula. “There’s so many of us, it’s annoying, almost! Every week, there’s someone to root for because there’s usually someone doing good. I’m just happy I get to be a part of it, so an all-American final will be a lot of fun tomorrow.”
So, who will win this iconic battle?
Sofia Kenin takes on Jessica Pegula in historic all-American final
Jessica Pegula has been knocking on big doors for a while now. Earlier this year, she won the ATX Open and finished runner-up at both the Adelaide International and the Miami Open. In Miami, she lost to none other than world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. The 31-year-old’s consistency is what stands out. She’s been showing up, going deep, and this final is just another stamp on what’s already a solid season.

Kenin, on the other hand, is still rebuilding. She was once world No. 4 and the 2020 Australian Open champ. The same year, she reached the Roland Garros final. But Grand Slam glory has felt far away since then. However, in 2025, there have been signs of a comeback.
The 26-year-old made the quarterfinals in Hobart and Dubai and has quietly worked her way through the Charleston draw without dropping a set. Also worth noting—she was the only unseeded player to make the quarterfinals.
This final means something extra for both players. Neither of them has ever lifted a clay-court title at the WTA level. That’s about to change.

Their head-to-head adds some spice, too. Pegula leads 3-2. Their last match? Pegula won it in straight sets at the US Open last year, a tournament where she eventually reached her first Grand Slam singles final. That memory is still fresh, and Kenin will surely want to even the score.
Jessica Pegula is the top seed and favorite on paper. Sofia Kenin is the comeback story still being written. Both are experienced, hungry, and ready to give it everything on green clay. Who do you think is going to grab the title? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
