American tennis legend Serena Williams recently bid goodbye to her tennis career. The 40-year-old made it to the third round of the US Open with two wins. However, she couldn’t go past Ajla Tomljanović in the third match. Over years Serena has played many intense matches. While she won most of them, in a few, she ended up on the losing side.

In a career that long, Serena also had a few angry spats with the chair umpire. One that turned into a big controversy was her argument with the chair umpire in the US Open 2018. The incident made headlines, and many believe the way the media treated it made it even worse. In the same row, an Australian cartoonist drew a controversial representation of Serena’s outburst, which irked popular rapper Nicki Minaj. Here’s what she did next.

In the final match of the US Open 2018, Serena was up against Naomi Osaka. The Japanese was going strong against Serena in the match. In the second game of the second set, the chair umpire gave Serena a coaching violation. Infuriated with that, the former world number 1 had an argument with the umpire.

Later, an Australian cartoonist Mark Knight made an animated representation of the scene. However, according to Nicki Minaj, the way he drew Serena was racist. She later called him out on her Beats 1 Queen Radio show.

“Every time you see a black woman not agree with something going on…they’re labeled as angry or having a meltdown. This needs to stop,” she said. Minaj further added, “Black women are not allowed to say they’re being mistreated without being told they’re on drugs, having a meltdown, they’re a sore loser, bitter, miserable… give me a f**king break.”

Serena Williams apologized to Naomi Osaka

In the heat of the incident, Osaka missed out on the glory she should have received after her first Major title. Owing to Serena’s mid-match argument with the umpire, there were a few allegations of poor sportsmanship by the fans.
