Back in 2017, when Serena embraced motherhood, it was a brave move. The American was in great form and had recently won her 23rd Grand Slam title. Motherhood brought in a set of different challenges for Serena. Here’s what she revealed about her early motherhood days in an interview.

Serena spoke about her challenges as a new mother

Motherhood is a challenging responsibility. In the initial few months, it’s very hard for a new mother to understand the needs of the child and mostly they end up questioning themselves about the decision to have a child. Serena also remembered a similar stage in her life in the first few months after the birth of Olympia.

“Sometimes I get really down and feel like, Man, I can’t do this. It’s that same negative attitude I have on the court sometimes. I guess that’s just who I am. No one talks about the low moments—the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry,” Serena said.

She further added, “I’ve broken down. I don’t know how many times. Or I’ll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, Why do I feel so sad when I have a beautiful baby? The emotions are insane.”

Why Serena Williams didn’t bring Olympia to her matches

Serena had the privilege of having her dad’s support on the court in the early days. The 23-time Grand Slam champion had a habit of having family members watching her closely in her matches. However, when Serena became a mother, she never risked taking Olympia to her matches.

The recently retired legend gave her reason behind it. Serena said that the presence of her daughter makes her conscious about her. Further, Serena said that if Olympia is present at the stadium, she will always think about her and won’t focus on the match.
