Genie Bouchard Reignites 6-Year-Old Feud Against Maria Sharapova With Her Cryptic Message Following Her Win Over 22-Year-Old Ukrainian

Rivalries are ubiquitous in all sports. No matter what kind of sport, rivalries between teams and players are eventual. Although player rivalries rarely cross the playing field, that is not always the case. Eugenie Bouchard, the Canadian tennis beauty, is one player who maintains her rivalry all the time. Recently, she made a snide comment about her former rival, Maria Sharapova, after winning against Dayana Yastremska at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Maria Sharapova and Dayana Yastremska were found guilty of doping at different times. In 2016, Sharapova received a one-year ban for taking Meldonium to treat a magnesium deficiency. She returned to the court in 2017. Yastremska, on the other hand, was banned after she failed a drug test in January 2021 but had her ban lifted in June.

Taking a dig at old rivals is a practice many follow in the world of sports. Recently, Genie Bouchard called out two old rivals after her Madrid Open match. The Canadian player has been performing well so far in the Madrid Open as she finds herself in round two. Her first-round victory saw her emerge triumphant over Dayana Yastremska.

After her victory, Bouchard went on to tweet a cryptic message about her rivals. It soon caught eyes of the tennis world as she fired shots at both Sharapova’s and Yastremska’s history with doping bans.

She has since deleted the tweet, which said, “There’s something about playing dopers in Madrid...”. She reminisced about the time she played Sharapova after she came back from her ban.

When Bouchard criticized Sharapova

After her return to tennis in 2017, Sharapova received quite a few scathing remarks from Bouchard. The two were ready to face each other in the Madrid Open in 2017. Unsurprisingly, fans were excited about the match-up. But most were excited due to the bitter rivalry the two had off-court. Sharapova went on to receive a wild card for the tournament, which made Bouchard call her a cheater.

The match culminated with Bouchard defeating Sharapova. Bouchard, elated after the match, was beaming during the interview. However, Sharapova did not indulge into the controversy surrounding the match.
