Navratilova’s first step

Navratilova mustered the courage to come out as a lesbian, drawing the attention and anger of many. However, the same courage gave her a push to approach her future partner in a bar.

In a 2017 interview, Martina narrated her first meeting with Julia Lemigova.

“I was at a club with some friends, a gay bar in Paris. We’re sitting here, we’re dancing and then we sit down, and then there’s this gorgeous woman standing at the bar and she’s like… looking at me.”

Thereafter, Lemigova chimed in and said, “I gave this kind of a Russian look to her. Really, it was more like, ‘Okay, you are coming to talk to me now.'” Obviously, the nine-time Wimbledon champion took the opportunity that day and the couple is happily married for eight years.
