Naomi Osaka is itching to go toe-to-toe at the French Open, ready to embrace the challenge and make it a showdown to remember. Despite her usual tendency to steer clear of the main draw situation, she recently made an effort to stay informed about the French Open draw. She had no idea that she would be paired against Iga Swiatek, and the whole news came out to her in a situation where “everyone got quiet.”

After claiming a victory in the first round against Lucia Bronzetti, in a post-match press conference, the 26-year-old recently opened up about how she was messing around with her team regarding having a match against the world number one. However, her joke came true, and she became a laughingstock in front of her whole team.

She stated, “The other day during that question, and I’m assuming, you know, now what it might look like and what are your thoughts as you look ahead to that? Honestly, I really didn’t know but then after I was like, why does everyone keep asking me about this draw?”

Subsequently, the former world number one acknowledged in all seriousness that she had not given the Polish tennis player any thought. Further, she added, “Then I knew that I was in the top half so I was like jokingly. I was like well it’s not like I’m playing Iga and then everyone, everyone got quiet. So I was like oh, Um, But yeah.”

The two players’ head-to-head record is now 1-1. In their most recent meeting, which took place in the Miami Open final in 2022, Swiatek emerged victorious. However, the Japanese tennis player prevailed in their prior encounter in the 2019 Toronto last-16 round.

On the other hand, since her comeback, she has not faced the 22-year-old tennis player, and she is quite optimistic about getting an opportunity to play against her. Along with that, she even shared her excitement to face such a competitive match, highlighting how she had witnessed Swiatek during her pregnancy.

In the same conversation, the 26-year-old tennis star showed her excitement for the prospect of facing the three-time tournament victor Swiatek. She stated, “I’m honestly really excited. I watched her a lot when I was pregnant. Honestly, I think it’s an honor to play her in the French Open because she’s won more than once here. It’s a very big honor and challenge for me.”

On the other hand, Osaka, who has made it clear that she wants to become a top player again, sees a possible matchup with Swiatek as a great way to test her skills against a tough opponent at the Grand Slam level. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see both the four-time Grand Slam champions go against each other, giving a tough competition and taking advantage of that chance to move forward in the French Open run.
