Women’s sports have gained massive popularity over the past years. Stars like Serena Williams, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, etc. have been the torchbearers for their respective sports. Moreover, women’s tennis has had a rich history to boast of.

The year 1973 was a turning point for women’s tennis. American legend, Billie Jean King, won the biggest match of her career when she defeated Bobby Riggs in the ‘Battle of the Sexes’. It was a significant victory as this led to many transformations in women’s tennis. The same year, the Women’s Tennis Association, also called the WTA, was formed.

Women’s sports have been reaching new heights recently. Last month, the clash between Barcelona and Real Madrid in the women’s Champions League quarterfinal at Camp Nou set a world record for attendance in a women’s match. 91,553 supporters were in attendance to watch the thrilling encounter between the Spanish rivals.

Further, the match between Angel City FC and San Diego Wave in NWSL Challenger Cup was viewed by 456K viewers, the sixth most in NWSL history. It was an extraordinary figure, considering the fact that it was a preseason, daytime game. However, a fan wasn’t impressed and made some inappropriate remarks about women’s sports.

Serena Williams’ husband slams a fan for his remarks toward women’s sports

When Angel City FC posted these numbers on Twitter, a fan said, “No one cares about women sports.” Serena’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, replied, “I can’t wait for the regular season. Thanks to all the haters – keep tweeting because I love when the free market shows how wrong you are.”

San Diego Wave went on to win the match 4-2. After Jodie Taylor opened the scoring for the home side, Tegan McGrady’s own goal leveled the scoreline. However, Alex Morgan scored just before halftime to give a goal advantage to San Diego Wave. In an action-packed second half, Christen Press equalized the scoreline 2-2. Subsequently, Alex Morgan and Amirah Ali’s goals enabled the home side to win 4-2.
