There’s no doubt that things are going the right way for Venus Williams. Just yesterday she won a grueling duel with world no.48 Italian, Camile Giorgi. The contest kept everyone on the edge of their seats. Though Venus Williams squandered her first match point, she eventually converted her second and finished off the match in some style. This was her first top 50 win in four years. To double her joy, today there was this news that she has been awarded the wildcard for this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Though it was not a surprise, it would give her the much-needed push and confidence to perform better at the championships. The former world no.1 and 5 time Wimbledon champion is in some form after her body did not cooperate with her to play tennis.

After six months of brief hiatus, she is back again playing some sublime tennis. Legendary tennis player Martina Navratilova has reacted to Venus Williams receiving the Wildcard. She took to Twitter to appreciate the move by the Championships.

Venus Williams is an active philanthropist. She fought for the equality of female athletes. This led UNESCO(United Nations Cultural Organization) to call her the first promoter of gender equality. Such has been her impact and popularity.

She was the key reason why women’s tennis players and men’s tennis players are paid an equal amount of money. In 2007 Wimbledon, Venus Williams won Wimbledon and was awarded the same prize money as the gentlemen’s singles winner Roger Federer. This was largely due to the singular efforts of Venus Williams. It is well justified to say that she dedicated her entire life to the betterment of the sport.

There is no shortage of support for Venus Williams. The whole of America is with her and everyone will be cheering her on during the championships. With no real pressure or expectations on her shoulders, she can prove to be a threat even for the upcoming stars.
