Michigan has always been proud of its rich athletic heritage, and one of its most famous athletes is scheduled to receive special recognition. A highlight of Michigan-born tennis star Serena Williams‘ iconic career will be on display at the prestigious Michigan History Museum. An important part of Serena Williams’ tennis journey will find a new home in the museum’s exhibits, as well as a fascinating collection of 2,000 objects in the Michigan Women Forward “Herstory” Gallery.
Michigan has been the home of several world-class athletes who have made a significant impact on their respective sports. Notable among them is basketball legend Magic Johnson, who hails from Lansing, Michigan. Another exceptional athlete from Michigan is gymnast Jordyn Wieber, who was born in DeWitt, Michigan. Wieber achieved great success in the sport, winning numerous medals, including a gold medal as part of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team at the 2012 London Olympics. However, it will be fair to say that Serena is certainly the one who became a renowned name, not just in the US, but throughout the world.

The Michigan History Museum preserves Serena Williams’ athletic excellence
Michigan Women Forward “Herstory” Gallery at the Michigan History Museum proudly preserves the remarkable contributions of women throughout the state’s history in its fascinating collection of 2,000 items. You’ll soon find Serena Williams’ tennis racquet, which honors her as a worldwide tennis icon for her extraordinary talent in the very same gallery.
In addition to Williams’ celebrated career, the gallery also exhibits Senator Lorraine Beebe’s chamber pot, which symbolizes her fight for gender equality and the lack of women’s restrooms in the legislative space. These works of art are powerful reminders of the strength, resilience and accomplishment of women in Michigan.
Tobi Voigt, the Director of Museums at the Michigan History Center, expressed great enthusiasm about this significant addition. “We already manage over 100,000 historical collections that tell Michigan’s stories, so including (Serena Williams’ racquet) was such a great way to preserve women’s history in a way we haven’t been able to,” Voigt explained, as reported by WILX 10.
