Coming off a rather rollercoaster of a clay-court season, the American tennis sensation, Coco Gauff, will be looking to make a run to the latter stages of the upcoming Wimbledon Championships. After all, the grass-court championships hold a special place in her nascent tennis career. As a child, she experimented with different sports, like soccer, gymnastics, and basketball, but she chose tennis due to the Williams sisters. But little did she know that she would be crushing the hopes of one of her idols, Venus Williams, the woman whom she idolized, as a 15-year-old at Wimbledon. However, that moment has been her only highlight in the prestigious grass-court major.
Now, despite having not set foot on the hallowed courts of Wimbledon for this year’s event, she is already dominating the headlines. Organizers chose to feature her in the promotions along with Carlos Alcaraz, while ignoring the 7-time champ, Novak Djokovic. It upset some fans, but the 19-year-old is making her intentions clear about Wimbledon; the latest being her Instagram story, full of wit, about the grass courts of Wimbledon.

Coco Gauff, Instagram story, and the Wimbledon grass
After the end of clay court swing in the French Open, the grass courts of Wimbledon will blossom with tennis action from July 3. The tournament will continue up to July 16. As millions of tennis fans are turning their attention toward Wimbledon, Coco Gauff isn’t far behind.

She lost to the 2023 Roland Garros winner, Iga Swiatek, in the quarterfinal of the French Open. But she may well be thinking of going big again. She shared the picture of a grass court on her Instagram and added an interesting caption displaying a double entendre. She wrote, “Someone told me to go touch grass so here I am.” People use the ‘go to touch the grass’ phrase to tell someone to get a reality check. But Gauff used it skillfully to signal the beginning of her Wimbledon campaign.
But there are many fans who question that Coco Gauff, along with the organizers, truly needs to ‘touch the grass’.

The controversy surrounding Gauff and the Wimbledon promo video
Though there is a history and attachment for Coco Gauff with Wimbledon, her name in the promotions triggered an online controversy. The organizers featured three players from men’s and women’s promotions, but left out 23 Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic, who won 7 Wimbledon titles.
The fans questioned the logic behind the organizers’ decision to include Coco Gauff and not one of the GOATs of the sport. Further, they tried to point out that the stature of the American star was all artificial because she hadn’t gone past the fourth round in Wimbledon.

But whether the former World No. 4 has won Wimbledon or not, she already has immortalized her name in the annals of the grass courts of England. Nobody can steal it from her.
