Serena Williams is a fierce and powerful athlete whose aura was enough to scare opponents. A lesser-known fact about when of the greatest sportswomen of our generation is that she is a devout Jehovah’s Witness. The tennis legend has been a follower of the spiritual school of thought from a tender age. Now the time has come for her to make a decision on whether she ushers her children along the same path.
The 41-year-old was an ardent follower of Jehovah’s Witness principles, even before she was baptized as one. Now, the arrival of her newborn, Adira River Ohanian, makes one wonder if Momma Smash would like her daughters to adopt her faith.

As declared by Serena’s husband, Alexis Ohanian, the Greatest Mother of All Time set an example for their daughters by adopting a humble path. Serena did not celebrate Olympia’s first birthday, as Jehovah’s Witnesses did not engage in any celebration. The 23-time Grand Slam champion celebrated the birth of Adira through a simple video, setting an example of humility for Olympia and her younger sister.
Adira, who is just born, is also expected to be raised similarly. Since the mother and daughters are following the faith strictly, the official conversion of their daughters looms large. It is yet to be revealed whether the power couple will wait till their daughters attain a certain age or if they will wait for the arrival of Adira to proceed with the baptism.

Nonetheless, the new mom assumed the responsibility of teaching religious principles to Olympia even before she officially converted. So, it is safe to say that Adira has a path set ahead of her, and with Olympia by her side, the siblings can grow up as Jehovah’s Witnesses together.
Serena and Venus Williams, too, grew up following the faith, as their mother is a Jehovah’s Witness.

Serena and Venus were taught to lean on god by their mother. In all her difficult times, the Queen of the Court turned to her faith for strength. In an interview with the New York Times in 2007, the former number one revealed that her faith helped her cope when she was in a dark place after her sister Yetunde Price’s murder in 2003.
The legendary champion often thanked Jehovah after her wins and was clear on her faith from the beginning. Ohanian and Richard both are not Jehovah’s Witnesses, but they offered constant support to their wives in raising their daughters as one.

ReRe shifted her focus to religion only after she hung her racket. In all the years she played, she still referred to herself as a Jehovah’s Witness and expressed her disappointment when she did something uncharacteristic of her faith. The faith is continuing in the 3rd generation, too, and only time can tell if Serena’s daughters will get baptized like their mother.
