The 2021 WTA Finals has commenced in Guadalajara, Mexico and the top 8 players have started to execute their superior form at the year-end tournament. At the group stages, Maria Sakkari of Greece locked horns with former French Open champion, Iga Swiatek. Interestingly, Sakkari has continued her dominance over the Polish star, winning it yet another time.
However, Swiatek got emotional just after the match ended. Following this moment, Sakkari appreciated the efforts of the 20-year old in the post-match interview. She even talked about the wonderful practices and chats they share.

Maria Sakkari’s kind words for Iga Swiatek
Maria Sakkari’s dream form continues as she wins her first match at the WTA Finals. The Greek crushed Iga Swiatek in straight sets to register an easy victory and gained some crucial points. Sakkari used her power and depth to dominate over long rallies. However, Swiatek’s unforced errors and double faults were advantageous for the Greek.
As the match got over, Swiatek got emotional as this wasn’t the best of her performances. However, Sakkari showed true sportswoman spirit and said some kind words to say about the Polish star. In the post-match interview, she said, “More than anything we’re human. She’s only 20yo. She’s going to have many more chances than I’ll have in the future because it’s only the beginning for her.”
She concluded her interview by saying, ” She’s a very, very nice girl. We always have great practices and great chats.” Despite winning the match, Sakkari boosted the confidence of her opponent. Truly she’s one of the kindest tennis players on the WTA tour.

Swiatek shares her disappointment after the defeat

After an unsatisfactory match against Maria Sakkari, Iga Swiatek talked openly about the match. When asked to speak on her mindset towards the end of the second set, she said, ” I was just frustrated and sad that I couldn’t overcome the stress. I keep forgetting that I still have time to learn how to do because playing in the Finals for me.”
Moreover, Swiatek added, ” When I forget this is new for me, still it’s okay to lose some matches because of the stress. For me, I feel like it’s a big deal and I’m feeling a little bit ashamed that my level was like that. So I was just feeling pretty sad. “
