Did Coco Gauff's US Open outfit miss the mark, or are fans just too hard to please?

Coco Gauff American Eagle collection launch event featured a bold statement: a denim jacket emblazoned with the words “thank you to the people who did not believe in me.” The collection, showcasing her edgy style with denim cargo miniskirts and V-neck sweater tank tops, quickly gained attention. However, just a week later, Gauff’s outfit choices at the US Open have become a topic of discussion, and not for the positive reasons many might have anticipated.”

In an interview earlier this year, Coco Gauff confirmed, “My Grand Slam outfits are planned basically a year to two years, even maybe sometimes longer in advance.” Remember the now-20-year-old’s 2023 US Open outfit? It was a pink and brown two-piece outfit in which she claimed her first Grand Slam title. Interestingly, the top, and skirt, along with the shoes (from the New Balance CG1 collection), eventually featured in the International Tennis Hall of Fame as well!

Speaking about it, she once admitted, “I’m incredibly honored and excited for my kit to be displayed at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. These pieces are meaningful to me, and when creating them, I had fully hoped they would serve to inspire future generations. The ITHF is the perfect place for that inspiration to begin.” Apart from the pink dress, the American player also adorned a green neon two-piece as well, impressing fans with her fashion. However, at this year’s last major, her outfit didn’t sit quite well with her supporters.

An X user (named Christian’s Court) revealed a glimpse of Coco Gauff’s light blue outfit (from New Balance). In the picture, Gauff adorns the follows:

  • Pleated skirt, and a collared top
  • White shoes, having the letter ‘Z’ imprinted in blue (right shoe) and yellow (left shoe)
  • Yellow head and wristbands.

Does her outfit seem like a planned two-year project? Fans have expressed their disapproval.

“..A little boring,” fans give their verdict over Coco Gauff’s 2024 US Open outfit

One fan wrote, “It has 3rd round lost written on it.” The user hinted both at her unpleasant outfit and her stumbling form since Wimbledon. Sadly, the world No. 3 has yet to qualify for a quarterfinal match in a tennis event since Berlin (semifinal exit). Besides her Olympic third-round defeat, Gauff’s exit from Canada (in the round of 16) and Cincinnati (in the round of 32) has left fans questioning her form. And it seems that her discouraging US Open outfit has further fueled those doubts!

Noting the similarities of the outfits of Australian athletes, one fan wrote, “Is she representing Australia?” Interestingly, many Australian athletes’ standard choice while playing a sport is a green or blue jersey along with a tinge of gold. If you look at the country’s flag, it also has a blue base (although a different shade).

Another fan approved Coco Gauff’s outfit in a diplomatic fashion, saying, “it’s okay,” but also “a little boring.” During the French Open, Gauff’s gray sleeveless top with a pleated skirt from New Balance received a positive reaction from fans. Talking about it, Gauff herself hilariously admitted, “They showed me a lot of sketches… I forgot which one is actually for this year, but I’m pretty sure it’s gray.” But it seems that the scenario has completely reversed now!

One fan criticized New Balance for ruining Gauff’s fashion, and wrote, “Guess the fashion skipped the women because the NB men look great in their high, lighter green.” Besides Gauff, Tommy Paul endorses New Balance as well. However, Gauff’s association with the brand began way before Paul (in 2014), but later on, she renewed her contract in 2022. A few days ago, Gauff even launched her second signature shoes, CG2, which she is likely to adorn at US Open.

A few days ago, we saw Gauff wearing a white t-shirt with ‘NB’ (New Balance) written on the front, along with dark blue colored tights, preparing to defend her title this year. A fan taking note of it, posted a video of an upset Meryl Streep (American actress) and wrote, “her practice kit is better than this.”

Coco Gauff is soon going to lock horns with Varvara Gracheva in the first round of the US Open. Will she be able to divert fans’ attention from her outfit to her gameplay?
