Jasmine Paolini has been the talk of the tennis world this season, capturing hearts and headlines. Her exceptional performance on the clay courts of Roland Garros is truly remarkable. In a journey that has been nothing short of a fairy tale, she has defied expectations and pushed through barriers that once seemed insurmountable. However, the final challenge looming before the Italian sensation is arguably her toughest yet, facing World No. 1, Iga Swiatek.

As far as Grand Slam tournaments are concerned, Jasmine Paolini is possibly at the peak of her career so far. Having made her WTA Tour debut in 2015, Paolini has steadily climbed the ranks, but 2024 has undoubtedly been her breakthrough year. Earlier this season, she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, marking her highest performance in a Grand Slam to date.

Now, for the first time, she will compete in a Grand Slam final at Roland Garros. However, her final encounter with World No.1 Iga Swiatek has prompted doubts from various quarters, including renowned commentator Mary Carillo.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Tennis Podcast on June 6, Carillo expressed her admiration for Paolini’s game. “I love Jasmine, I think she’s, I love her posture. I mean, this woman is riding a Shetland, let’s face it. But she keeps her shoulders straight. She keeps her head quiet. She moves beautifully. I just really like watching her move and hit,” Carillo praised.

Despite her admiration, Carillo tempered her expectations for Paolini’s chances against the Polish star. “I’m hoping that she could live with Swiatek. If she gives us one tight set, I’d be very happy,” she added. Swiatek, who has been in sensational form at Roland Garros, is the clear favorite for many. She hasn’t lost a single match in three years and has won the tournament for the past two seasons. On the other hand, the Italian has lost both of her previous matches against the Pole.

This is not the first time a former tennis player has rallied for the Pole. In March this year, Serena Williams’ ex-coach Rennae Stubbs also supported Iga’s dominance and predicted she could win many more French Open titles. “I think Iga can win eight French Opens, actually think she can win more than eight but I think she can win at least eight French Opens.”

While several analysts have believed in the 23-year-old’s clay court dominance, here is what the World Number 1 said about playing on clay.

“I love playing on clay” – When Iga Swiatek expressed her happiness

Iga Swiatek’s clay court dominance is unmistakable, particularly evident from her stellar performance this season. She clinched titles at both the Madrid Open and the Italian Open and is now on the brink of securing her third consecutive title at Roland Garros.

Swiatek has openly expressed her affinity for clay courts. During an interview three years ago, she shared her delight in playing on this surface. “In terms of training, clay is more complicated. I feel comfortable and love playing on clay. I feel my joints are not that tired after the concrete tour. That’s very good for me,” she said. Despite her love for clay, Swiatek also conveyed her ambition to excel on all surfaces.

As the Roland Garros final approaches, the tennis world is eager to see if Jasmine Paolini can mount a serious challenge against Swiatek. Regardless of the outcome, the match promises to be an intense showdown.
