Serena Williams back on the courts? Yes, please. Many tennis fans share similar sentiments. Sure, the tennis legend hung up her racquets in September 2022. You can keep Serena Williams away from tennis, but you can’t keep tennis away from its Queen. The former American tennis star has frequently hinted at a possible return to the courts, and her latest remark has left fans buzzing with excitement.
In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, Williams touched upon a wide range of topics, including her probable return to the tennis courts. Speaking in the interview, the tennis great expressed her difficulties in watching matches. “Oh my God. I just can’t right now.” Such angst is normal for an athlete transitioning to a post-playing career. However, the ESPY 2024 host does not seem to be done just yet with her playing career.
When quizzed if she desires to make a comeback on the courts soon, the 23-time Grand Slam winner responded with positivity. “I think as long as I’m healthy, that’s always going to be in the back, back, back, back, back, back, back of my mind,” she said. “I stay fit. I stay healthy. When I’m watching, it’s like, Okay, well, you could be out there too.” This, however, is not the first time Williams has resonated with such sentiments.

Serena Williams is happy to see other female athletes garnering recognition, but she says she's “frustrated” with the narrative of a women’s sports renaissance.
“It was always here. You guys just started paying attention.” https://t.co/ZoBgngiLyc

In a press conference in 2022, the American former player had hinted similarly. “The chances (of a return) are very high. You can come to my house, I have a court. I still haven’t really thought about (retirement).” While this is not a new remark from Williams, tennis fans are indeed ecstatic as they desire to see Serena return to courts, yet again.
‘She Could Still Be Competitive,’ Fans believe in Serena Williams’ dominance despite retirement
As soon as the interview was shared on their official Twitter handle by Vanity Fair with the caption, “Serena Williams says she can’t fully rule out a comeback, no matter how remote the possibility,” tennis fans from all across the globe started to express their ecstasy over Serena Williams’ possible return.

Retweeting the post, an X user highlighted the dominance of the 23-time Grand Slam winner. “I think she could still be competitive if she trained for like 6 months and got back on tour.” Williams went on a long hiatus in 2021. Playing in Wimbledon in 2021, Williams slipped on a slick court in her match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in Round 1. She could only make a comeback next year at the same venue. However, despite her injury-led comeback, she demonstrated a top-notch game in the season and went on to win the first two rounds of the US Open. Now with the tennis star being away from injuries for a long time, her return can indeed prove to be fatal to several stars.
Another user resonated with similar sentiments and wrote, “genuinely she could win a slam rn easily.” The Queen of the Court earned her nickname after she brought a long list of grand slams under her name. Her impressive career, which lasted almost three decades, gave her 23 Slam titles, and hence, the expectations from fans of winning one more slam can not be unjustified. Another user highlighted the state of women’s tennis and claimed that Serena can definitely win big in such situations.

“She’s seeing the state of wta and thinks yah i could still beat those flops and you know what? i agree!” Interestingly, the WTA circuit has evolved phenomenally, especially at the ongoing Wimbledon. To the surprise of many, the inform Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff could not even make it to the quarterfinals. Besides, the finals of the tournament are scheduled to take place between 7th-seeded Jasmine Paolini and 31st-ranked player Barbora Krejčíková. This speaks volumes about the wide range of opportunities for several players. However, another user did not seem to be very elated by the news.

Taking to X, the user wrote, “She wants to be losing round 3s like Wozniacki.” Caroline Wozniacki retired from the sport in 2020 to start a family. However, the fire did not die down as she made a comeback to the courts in 2023. But, her comeback has not been impressive enough. In the ongoing Wimbledon, she faced a baffling defeat to Elena Rybakina in the third round, 6-0, 6-1. Another user simply highlighted that Serena can flourish better in the Veteran circuit. “Como no sea el circuito de veteranos (Unless it’s the veteran circuit),” the user wrote in Spanish.
It will be interesting to see if the former pro stands by her aspirations and returns to the courts soon! Will it be possible?
